Two very different Lanzarote experiences share equal billing in this Sunday morning tour. You'll get to spend time mixing with locals in Teguise's market – the biggest outdoor bazaar in the Canaries – and lapping up the Hollywood stardust of the legendary LagOmar. Ramona, one of our local guides, says, ‘LagOmar is one of my favourite places – a spectacular artwork-museum-house, where you can admire the genius of Manrique and Soto.'

More than 360 stalls cram into Teguise's pretty plaza and adjacent cobbled streets, so you'll be spoilt for choice. Cue tables creaking with intricate Canarian lacework, foodstuffs and all sorts of jewellery, paintings and handicrafts. And it's all given a carnival atmosphere by local folk dancers, hair braiders and panpipe bands. What's more, any purchases help the local economy and community. Ramona says, ‘Teguise Sunday market isn't just about shopping – you can feel the real Canarian way of living, with bars, cafés and the history of this beautiful former capital of Lanzarote.'

If the market is a feast of the senses, the LagOmar is a feast for your eyes. It was conceived by local architect Cesar Manrique and designed by local artist Jesus Soto. Set in a volcanic quarry, it looks like the sort of place where Bond arch-villain Ernst Blofeld plots world domination. The labyrinthine complex has a cave-bar, a restaurant, apartments and a museum. Local lore says it was briefly owned by Hollywood legend Omar Sharif, but he lost it in a game of cards.

De reisleidster was ludmilla uit Tsjechië die heel goed Duits,Engels en spaans sprak. Ze was een heel gezellige vrouw die heel goed schakelde tussen de Duitstalige en de Engelstalige toeristen. Ze kon goed vertellen onderweg en over de markt in Tequise. Ook bij Laq Omar het huis van Omar Sharif was ze goed. Een hele vriendelijke goedlachse vrouw die goed was. Toen we uitstappen en fooi wilden geven voor haar en de buschauffeur zei ze dat hij het verdiend had. Groetjes van de Hollandse toeriste

Lagomar is heel mooi. Alleen de vrije tijd op de markt in tehuis is veel tekort. Niet eens tijd gehad om te eten. Snel een kopje koffie en ik denk de helft van de markt niet gezien. Beetje jammer. Bij lagomar ook geen tijd om te drinken of iets dergelijks. Wij vinden het meer dan genoeg betaald voor de vrije tijd die we hebben gekregen.

De gids ging eerst naar lagomar omdat het dan rustiger was daar, top. Jammer dat deze uitstap nt in het nederlands was. ( is een algemene opmerking, weinig Nederlandse uitstappen)

Nat Geo Day Tour: La Geria, Vineyards that Sprouted from Fire

When Timanfaya's six long years of eruptions ceased in 1736, the farmers of La Geria believed their fertile lands were lost forever under a thick layer of ash. But the local families needed to make the land productive again, and through sheer hard work and determination, they succeeded in creating the vineyards of La Geria. You'll start off with a scenic walk, following trails through private vineyards belonging to the family-owned bodega of Nacho Romero, opened exclusively for National Geographic travellers. As you soak up the unique character of these landscapes where vineyards are surrounded by volcanoes, the owner will explain how the layer of volcanic ash, known locally as ‘picón,' has shaped their cultivation methods, which are unique in the world. If you are lucky enough to find them ripe, you might even get to pick grapes straight from the vine as you hear Nacho or his wife Luisa, both winemakers, talk about the characteristics of volcanic wine. Back at the bodega after the walk, you'll be able to sample one of the artisanal wines that Nacho and Luisa make in their home winery. Next, you'll head to Bodega La Geria – another important component of the ecological wine making movement. The winemaker himself will show you around the bodega. Find out the secrets of the hollows, called ‘zocos' which shelter the vines from the wind, and discover the different varieties of grapes that thrive in Lanzarote's volcanic terroir. To finish, savour a tasting of one of the estate's renowned wines with local cheese and crackers.

Sci-fi scenery and camels – this morning in Timanfaya National Park is no ordinary tour. On this fun-filled adventure, you'll explore Lanzarote's top attraction by both traditional and modern means. Star turns include the historic ‘Raven's Volcano', a visitors' centre, the El Femés viewpoint, and, of course, a camel ride. Marian, one of our local guides, says, "you get to enter a volcano crater – it's a truly spine-tingling experience – while the camel ride gives you time to absorb the lunar landscape."First up is the Volcan del Cuervo, or ‘Raven's Volcano'. Located on the edge of Timanfaya National Park, it breaches from a landscape of jet-black soot. It was here that the volcanic eruptions that created Timanfaya began in 1730. Towering walls surround the crater but for a gap seared open by a river of lava, which allows you into the base. Next, you'll zip over to the Mancha Blanca Visitors' and Interpretative Centre. Have a poke around its multimedia displays and get the lowdown on the geology of the Canaries.Then, it's time for the more light-hearted part of the tour – the camel ride. You'll be helped on to wooden seats harnessed to the single-humped camel as a handler guides you around. It's a laugh a minute as you scale the wild and wonderful volcanic lands. If you don't fancy the camel ride, you can book a version of the tour without it included. There's also a small museum dedicated to the Canarian camel, affectionately known as ‘tochas.' You'll also enjoy sweeping views from El Femés Viewpoint, perched at 450 metres, it overlooks Los Ajaches, Playa Blanca, Fuerteventura and Lobos Island for unforgettable coastal panoramas.

Sites & Bites: Salt flats and Malvasia wine in Lanzarote

Journey through Lanzarote's volcanic landscapes and culinary traditions on this tasty tour. Your adventure begins at Las Salinas de Janubio, the largest salt flats in the Canary Islands. Learn about how it's traditionally harvested, with techniques dating back to the 19th century. The white salt contrasting with the island's dark volcanic terrain makes this place perfect for practising your photography skills.Continue to El Golfo, a fishing village on the island's west coast. You'll stop by Lago Verde, a green lagoon in an old volcano crater that's coloured by the algae in the water. The lagoon is separated from the sea by a black sand beach, contrasting with the green water of the lagoon and the deep blue of the sea. During your free time in El Golfo, you can explore the town's plentiful oceanfront restaurants at your own pace. While food isn't included in this part of the trip, local favourites such as grilled fish and papas arrugadas, AKA wrinkled potatoes, are well worth trying. This Canarian specialty is boiled in heavily salted water until the skin wrinkles and forms a salty crust, typically served with a red or green mojo sauce.Finally, you'll visit La Geria, Lanzarote's wine region, known for its unique production methods. Vines are grown in pits dug into the volcanic soil and protected by stone walls called zocos. This helps the vines thrive despite the dry conditions and strong winds on the island, which then produces the island's renowned Malvasia wine. You'll wrap up your tour with a wine-tasting session, sampling the flavours Lanzarote is known for while taking in its volcanic views.
