Things to do in Quinta da Regaleira
Discover the the grand palace and lush gardens of Quinta da Regaleira, imagined by Italian opera-set designer Luigi Manini with Brazillian millionaire António Carvalho Monteiro. Located a short 40 minutes outside of Lisbon in the hillside town of Sintra you'll find a romantic property spread over 9 acres, holding an extravagant estate, luxurious gardens, lakes, grottoes and hidden mysterious symbols of the Knights Templar.
Once a small summer retreat owned by Baroness de Regaleira in the 1840’s, the grounds were converted into a palatial home known as "The Palace of Monteiro the Millionaire." Constructed from 1904 to 1910, the new interiors boasted carved fireplaces, frescos and Venetian-glass mosaics. Perched into a hillside, the millionare’s estate was erected in the neo-Manueline style, reviving the forms of late-Gothic architecture in Portugal with the help of stonemasons from Coimbra.
Tour the UNESCO World Heritage site’s interior and walk the incredibly ornate gardens multitude of fountains, statues, caves via winding paths or by a series of underground tunnels.
